| “ | I am as certain of this as I am certain that I am a detective. And I have a name for this thing guiding me from somewhere not of this world. I call it: Beyond. | ” |
Beyond (ビヨンド Biyondo) also written as (世界を超越した場所で僕を操るもの What Controls Me In a Place That Transcends the World) is a special phenomenon that plays a major role throughout the novel JORGE JOESTAR. It is seemingly the 'author' of the story.
It is used by Tsukumojuku Kato, and later on split between three people after it chooses a new protagonist: Joji Joestar, George Joestar II, and Dio Brando.
Appearance
Beyond is described to be GodW itself because of its infinite power. Trinity, the only Beyond with an appearance, appears to take the form of Jesus Christ; having long hair and a beard, and bearing the Crown of ThornsW. In the illustration, Trinity's face is covered in a shadow.
In Chapter 16, George describes Beyond to look like Dio, but with sad looking eyes.[1] It slightly appears to bear the Holy WoundsW on its shoulder, like Christ himself, heavily implying that it could be him.
Description
Beyond is described to be God himself, given the abilities it is capable of like transcending time and space, Beyond gives its user "script immunity" or in other words, plot armor. It is said to be the writer of the users' story, making them the main character, and controlling their fate; because of this, Beyond is one of the most powerful abilities in the series despite not being canon.
Abilities
| “ | Your Beyond is making it happen. I'm sure this isn't a task just anyone could accomplish. For a Miracle like this to occur, you need the Name of God. 'God' is words. Words are names. | ” |
—Tsukumojuku in JORGE JOESTAR Chapter 7: Airplanes
Fate Manipulation
A Beyond is the physical manifestation of the user's will to control their destiny. Beyond has an infinite power and can communicate with their users indirectly. This ability is depicted as a separate entity entirely from those who possess them. It goes beyond space and time, and is seen as God and/or the 'Author of the Story'. Users of this ability can control Fate accordingly, so long as it doesn't go against the flow of "the story" if they continue to believe in their Beyond.
Notable Consequences and Uses
If a user were to have stopped believing in Beyond, or is now considered a minor character since Beyond has chosen a new protagonist, the user would later on die from a horrible fate.
- Tsukumojuku loses his Beyond after stating that it had abandoned him, meaning it had chosen a new main character and had now deemed him a minor character in the 'story'. [2]
- Tonpetty predicts that George would be brutally murdered if he didn't believe in his Beyond.[3]
- George uses Beyond to bring him and Lisa Lisa back home to plan their wedding.
- Tsukumojuku is later on killed by Antonio Torres.[4]
- George is nearly killed by Antonio, and is saved by the deceased Tsukumojuku by believing in his Beyond and bringing him to save him.[5]
- George uses Beyond to bring out the sun, moments before Dio tries to kill him.[6]
- Tsukumojuku sends Jorge to the H.G. Wells spaceship. [7]
Faith and Beliefs (Role)
| “ | You've got another role to play. But don't worry, it's a role your Beyond prepared for you. Although that doesn't guarantee it'll lead to a happy ending. | ” |
—Tsukumojuku in JORGE JOESTAR Chapter 13: The Enemy
In order for Beyond to work, its user must believe in their Beyond. Each user has their own belief, based on the role that they believe in. Tsukumojuku and Joji believe that they are the best detectives in the world that can solve anything. Dio believes he is the king of the world, and George believes that he is his story's protagonist and must act with audacity.
Only another Beyond can defeat Beyond.[8]
Trinity
| “ | Human bodies had such strong identities, I thought; all of this was only possible because me and the other 'Jorge Joestar' and Dio all had Beyonds, but those three Beyonds were actually one. The Trinity. | ” |
"Trinity" was the only Beyond that had made an appearance in the novel. There are currently no other Beyond's that have a physical appearance, but are the physical manifestation of the user's will to control their destiny. Throughout the novel, Tsukumojuku teaches Joji and George on how to believe in their Beyond as he travels throughout their universes.
Three Identities
In Christianity, TrinityW means the unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three persons in one Godhead. Trinity is shared between Joji, George and Dio; hence its name. George plays his role as the father of Joseph. Joji as the Son (grandson of Joseph which refers to Saint JosephW), and Dio as the Holy Spirit; via the Corpse Parts.
Tsukumojuku claims that in order for Beyond's miracles to work, their user would need the name of a God. It is described that Dio's name is Italian for "God'. Tsukumojuku's name is 9, 10, 9, 10, 9, flipping the kanji for 9 makes the astrological symbol for Jupiter: ♃. JupiterW is the Roman name for the Greek God, ZeusW.[9] After his death, he explains that he is currently with the Jorge Joestar in England, the Jorge Joestar at the Arrow Cross House, and with Dio in his coffin; all at the same time because God is able to split into three, alluding to the concept of The Holy Trinity.
Trivia
- Trinity takes the form of Jesus Christ from Steel Ball Run.
- It is heavily implied that Beyond is possibly Jesus, or even God himself. Though it was never confirmed.
